Conclusion

When coaching women’s judo at the top level, it is not sufficient to treat the athletes the same way as men. In the same way as children should not be coached as mini adults, so women should not be coached as pseudo men.

The great coach is also cognisant of the cultural variations in the role of women within the national society, to navigate perceived and actual barriers to participation and performance within sports, within a combat sport, and within judo. There are few examples of women coaching judo on the international stage, but these are growing, and we have also seen the first example of a woman coaching an international men’s judo team.

There are examples of research which has sought to identify the technical and tactical nuances that relate to women’s judo, and coaches will continue to search for those specifics to chase a performance advantage.
